To the Church in Ephesus
(5) / The Kingdom of God 5
The Mystery of the Lampstands
【Rev 1:20】 The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.
The Lord Jesus used the golden lampstand as a symbol of the church, showing the continuity between the New Testament church and Old Testament Israel, God's chosen people.
【Eph 3:6】 This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.
Commendation and Discerning Fruit
【Rev 2:1-3】 "To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands. 2I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. 3 You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary.
Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.
Forsaking the First Love
Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.
For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.
The first love is a love that comes from God, enabling us to love others with the love of Christ.
For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another.
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.
Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven-as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little."
Why Would One Abandon the First Love?
Ephesus was a highly commercialized metropolis, where interpersonal relationships could easily be measured by profit and self-interest.
Jn 13:35) / Ephesus was filled with pagan religions, but Christians were recognized as belonging to Christ through the love of Christ.
In the Ephesian church, there were false apostles. In the process of discerning true apostles from false ones, they could easily fall into cold and merciless criticism.
The first love is the love that goes the extra mile!
Hating Nicolaitan Practices and Warning Against Secularization
But you have this in your favor: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.
Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality. 15 Likewise, you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.
Balaam symbolizes compromising righteousness for personal gain, betraying the faith, and religious syncretism.
The Nicolaitans may be understood as "the destruction of the people," representing immoral and unrestrained behavior.
God commended the church in Ephesus because they hated the practices of the Nicolaitans.
Love what Christ loves and hate what Christ hates.
The greatest crisis facing the church today is not persecution, but secularization.
The secularization of the church means that the church no longer depends on Christ, but relies instead on worldly values.
Remembrance, Repentance, and Revival
【Rev 2:5】 Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.
Sir William Mitchell Ramsay, 1851-1939
Spurgeon, (1834-1892)
Spurgeon regarded this passage as a text about the "revival" of the church.
Ramsay said that what Christ required of the church in Ephesus was not something new, but a return to the character they once possessed.
Reward for the Overcomer
【Rev 2:7】 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.
The fruit reveals the character of the overcomer and becomes the seed of revival for the church.
